Microsoft's New Ad: Another Lauren gets a PC

Posted by Mohamed Abid on May 16, 2009 at 7:47 PM Comments comments (0)

LAPTOP HUNTER

Microsoft has released the fifth laptop hunter ad in which Lauren and mom go searching for a PC for her to take to law school.

She says she needs a laptop with speed and battery life for less than $1700. They choose a Dell XPS 13a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and a $899 price tag.

I don't understand why anyone with 1,700 free dollars would choose a 900 dollar computer (Mac or PC) but you can watch the ad yourself.

They received the following details on the device from a source:
The ZuneHD will have a capacitive, multi-touch OLED screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and TV out, from what looks to be a HDMI port on the side. The radio will now be HD and the device will support HD media playback, which will be available from the updated Zune Marketplace.

Weekend worms strike Twitter, teen admits responsibility

Posted by applerocksmyworld on April 13, 2009 at 3:59 PM Comments comments (0)

Twitter was hit with at least three different worm attacks that started Saturday and continued into Sunday, the micro-blogging service acknowledged as it promised users it would review its coding practices.

"At about 2 a.m. on Saturday, four accounts were created that began spreading a worm on Twitter," company co-founder Biz Stone announced in a blog entry Sunday. "From 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. PST, our security team worked on eliminating the vectors that could identify this worm. At that time, about 90 accounts were compromised. We identified and secured these accounts."

That worm, which was widely reported on Saturday and dubbed "StalkDaily," exploited a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Twitter service to infect user profiles. The original attack relied on tweets that referred to several malicious accounts allegedly created by Mooney; when users viewed those accounts' profiles, their own profiles became infected, and their accounts then sent more spam-style messages to entice friends to the just-infected profiles.

Those messages promoted the StalkDaily site with tweets such as "I love www.StalkDaily.com" and "Dude, www.StalkDaily.com is awesome. What's the fuss?"

Windows Touch Is Coming To PCs Soon

Posted by LS-HACKS on March 26, 2009 at 1:51 PM Comments comments (2)

Microsoft will include multi-touch controls with Windows 7 and is launching the Windows Touch Logo program to help consumers understand if a machine is compatible with the new control system.

The Windows Touch Team has posted a very in depth report on the new touch capabilities on the Windows 7 Engineering blog...

Making Windows Touchable
With Windows 7 we have enriched the Windows experience with touch, making touch a first-class way to interact with your PC alongside the mouse and keyboard. We focused on common activities and refined them thoughtfully with touch in mind. You will have the freedom of direct interaction, like being able to reach out and slowly scroll a web page then flick quickly to move through it. With new touch optimized applications from creative software developers you will be able to immerse yourself as you explore you photos, browse the globe, or go after bad guys in your favorite games.

-----
Touch gestures:
Windows 7 has a simple set of touch gestures that work in many existing applications. These include the basics of tap and drag, as well as scroll, right-click, back, forward, zoom, and rotate. More details on how gestures work is described later.

Improved high DPI support:
Windows 7 has improved high dpi support (see High DPI blog post).

Improved window management:
The updated taskbar and windows arranging features go a long way towards making Windows easier to use with touch.
o The taskbar buttons and thumbnails are ideally sized for pressing with touch, and specific behaviors are tuned for touch input.
o Aero Peek has been tuned to work with touch
o Sizing and positioning windows is easy with Aero Snap

Refinements to key experiences:
The top browsing and media activities were refined to provide an optimized touch experience. IE8 includes support for the core touch gestures (scrolling, back, forward, zoom) as well as an optimized address bar that opens by dragging down, and extra spacing in favorites and history lists when opened with touch for easy selection. In Windows Media Player, the transport controls (play, pause, etc) have larger clickable areas even though they still look the same size – so that they are easier to touch.

Touch keyboard:
The on-screen keyboard has been optimized for touch with glow key feedback that’s visible when your finger is covering the letter and multitouch support for natural typing behavior and key combinations. It’s designed for quick usage, like entering a URL.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8's Epic Fail: Scores 20/100 on Acid3 vs. Apple Safari's perfect 100

Posted by applerocksmyworld on March 22, 2009 at 10:50 AM Comments comments (4)
"When Internet explorer 8 was introduced on Thursday, many in the development community rushed to download it, install it and try it out on the Acid 3 Test, developed by The Web Standards Project. All over the world, the score was turning up the same for almost everyone. Out of a possible score of 100, IE 8 rang up 20. It failed the test and failed it badly," Ed Moltzen reports for ChannelWeb.

"While IE 8 is scoring 20 out of 100 on the Acid 3 standards test, Apple's Safari 4 browser scores 100 on Acid 3. They also have a little product called the iPhone that uses Safari, that's enjoying some success," Moltzen reports.

Note: Designed by the Web Standards Project, Acid tests determine whether a web browser complies with emerging Internet standards. Acid 2 tests for compatibility with new features in the HTML, CSS, and PNG standards. Pioneering the standardization effort, Safari passed Acid 2 on October 27, 2005, two-and-a-half years before any other popular browser. Safari is the first  and only web browser to pass Acid 3. Acid 3 tests a browser?s ability to fully render pages using the web standards used to build dynamic, next-generation websites, including CSS, JavaScript, XML, and SVG.

Moltzen continues, "In and of itself, standards compliance for free software like a browser won't determine the king of the marketplace. But Microsoft is losing market share on the desktop, and its desktop business actually shrunk during its most recent quarter. Right now it could use all the friends it can get. And in a community critical to the technology industry, its longtime rival Apple now has a big advantage."

topright Notes from MWC: Copying iPhone, Offline Gmail, Turn by Turn GPS for iPhone

Posted by LS-HACKS on February 18, 2009 at 8:56 PM Comments comments (0)

Mobile World Congress 2009 took place this week in Barcelona, Spain bringing together the major players of the mobile phone industry. While Apple chose not to attend, a lot of the talk still surrounded Apple's iPhone. Here are a few notes of interest to come out of the conference.

- Apple's iPhone seemed to take center stage during a panel discussion with CEOs from Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T. They criticized Apple's closed vertical ecosystem. Microsoft's Steve Ballmer, specifically, had this to say:

"I agree that no single company can create all the hardware and software," he said. "Openness is central because it's the foundation of choice."

One audience question asked why these panelists were so worried about Apple when the iPhone holds only a small percentage of mobile phone marketshare. AT&T's De la Vega summed up the answer: "Because the other 99.5 percent of the industry is trying to copy the iPhone."

- Apple's investment in supporting upcoming web standards may begin to pay off with a new breed of "offline" web applications. Google demoed a version of GMail that will still work even when Airplane mode is on. Airplane mode effectively takes the iPhone offline, but by using local storage capabilities found in HTML5, users would still be able to browse and manipulate their mail. A YouTube video shows it in action. These sort of offline web applications have been discussed as possibilities in the past given Apple's investment in web-standards. Of course, these apps would work on any HTML5-compliant browser, including Android phones.

Photo from The iPhone Blog

- A company called Sygic demonstrated a full featured turn-by-turn GPS application for the iPhone and is planning on submitting it to the App Store despite SDK terms that seem to specifically prohibit such applications.

- Gizmodo took a look at the new Android G2 and liked it with the exception of the typing interface.

Microsoft Posts Details About SkyBox Service

Posted by LS-HACKS on February 6, 2009 at 6:03 PM Comments comments (0)
Microsoft has posted a detailed description of their soon coming Skybox service for mobile phones. The service will sync information between your mobile phone and the web.

-----
Back up phone information to a password-protected web site
Microsoft My Phone syncs information on your mobile phone to a storage space on a web site hosted by Microsoft. If your phone is lost or stolen, or if you upgrade to a new phone, you can easily restore the contacts, calendar appointments, photos, and other information that you stored on My Phone to a compatible new or replacement phone. Most phones that run the Windows Mobile 6 operating system are compatible with My Phone service.

Access and update your contacts and appointments on the web
Microsoft My Phone enables you to view and manage phone information by using a web browser. In your web account, you can add, edit, and delete contacts and calendar appointments, and the changes will appear on your phone the next time that you sync.

Share photos with friends and family
Microsoft My Phone makes it easy to view photos on your computer that were taken with your camera phone. From your web account, you can save photos to your computer or can e-mail them to family and friends.

How much does the Microsoft My Phone service cost?
Microsoft does not charge a fee for the My Phone service at this time. But the data plan you have with your mobile operator may require you to pay data-transfer charges when you use the service. If you are unsure of your plan coverage, please contact your mobile operator.

How do I create a Microsoft My Phone account?
You can download the Microsoft My Phone application by browsing to http://www.getskybox.com/install on your mobile phone. When you browse to this site from select countries, you will be asked for your phone number to receive a text message which will contain the link for downloading the application. The first time that you run the Microsoft My Phone application on your phone after downloading it, you will be asked to sign in using your Windows Live™ ID (or sign up for a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one).

What information can I back up on Microsoft My Phone?
The first time that you run the My Phone application on your mobile phone, you will be asked to accept or change the recommended settings. Recommended settings will synchronize contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, photos, videos, text messages, music, and documents between your phone and your My Phone web account. However:
- If you have an active connection with Microsoft Exchange server (which is frequently used for corporate e-mail), My Phone will not synchronize your contacts, calendar appointments, or tasks.
- If you have Windows Live installed on your phone, it will synchronize your Windows Live contacts with the Windows Live web site, and My Phone will synchronize your other contacts to your account on the My Phone web site.
- If you have an external memory card and selected My Phone's recommended settings, information on the external memory card will not be synchronized.
- If you store contacts on the SIM card provided by your mobile operator, My Phone will not synchronize these contacts.
- If you have any documents stored outside the My Documents folder on your phone, My Phone will not synchronize these documents.

How much data can I back up?
Your Microsoft My Phone account gives you 200 MB of free storage on the Microsoft My Phone web site. If a synchronization would result in exceeding this limit, you will receive an error message on your phone and your account on the My Phone web site will only include information received prior to reaching this limit. Any files in excess of this limit will not be saved.

Does Microsoft My Phone back up my phone information automatically?
If you accept the recommended settings, Microsoft My Phone will automatically synchronize information between your mobile phone and your Microsoft My Phone web account once per day between 11:00 P.M. and 5:00 A.M., except when your phone cannot connect to your default data network - for example, when your phone is turned off, out of range, or roaming. You can also back up your data manually at any time by selecting Sync in the Microsoft My Phone application on your phone.

Will Microsoft My Phone work on my mobile phone?
Currently, Microsoft My Phone works only on phones that run the Windows Mobile 6+ operating system. This includes phones from many different manufacturers and mobile operators. To check which version of Windows Mobile your phone is using, click Start > Settings > About on your phone.

What if I've already lost my mobile phone?
If you lost your mobile phone before you began using the Microsoft My Phone service (for instance, if you installed the software but did not perform a sync operation), you cannot use Microsoft My Phone to restore the information that you lost. But if you used My Phone on your old mobile phone, download and install Microsoft My Phone on your new mobile phone (as described in How do I create a Microsoft My Phone account?) and sign in to the Microsoft My Phone application on your phone using the same Windows Live ID that you previously used. Then, by synchronizing manually or waiting for the next automatic synchronization, all information that you backed up to your Microsoft My Phone web account will be restored to the new phone.

Windows 7 Editions Officialy Announced

Posted by LS-HACKS on February 3, 2009 at 6:16 PM Comments comments (0)

Today Microsoft announced its upcoming editions of the Windows 7 operating system.

Microsoft expects that a majority of customers will be best served by two primary editions of Windows 7: Windows 7 Home Premium for consumers, and Windows 7 Professional for businesses.

-----
The first change in Windows 7 was to make sure that editions of Windows 7 are a superset of one another. That is to say, as customers upgrade from one version to the next, they keep all features and functionality from the previous edition. As an example, some business customers using Windows Vista Business wanted the Media Center functionality that is in Windows Vista Home Premium but didn’t receive it in Business edition. Customers won’t have to face that trade-off with Windows 7. With Windows 7 there is a more natural progression from one edition to the next.

With Windows 7 there will be two primary editions: Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Professional. We think those two SKUs will meet most customers’ needs.

For our biggest enterprise customers, we'll continue to have an Enterprise edition. This edition will not be available at retail or by OEMs for preinstallation on a new PC.

We know emerging markets have unique needs and we will offer Windows 7 Home Basic, only in emerging markets, for customers looking for an entry-point Windows experience on a full-size value PC.

We’ll also continue to offer Windows Starter edition, which will only be offered pre-installed by an OEM.

And certainly there is also a small set of customers who want everything Windows 7 has to offer. So we will continue to have Windows 7 Ultimate edition to meet that specialized need. Windows 7 Ultimate edition is designed for PC enthusiasts who “want it all” and customers who want the security features such as BitLocker found in Windows 7 Enterprise edition.
